Sad News

I received this email yesterday:
Dear Jolene,
I am sorry to let you know that my mother, Dorothy Gilman, passed away this morning at the age of 88. She had been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for the past nine years so her death is both sad and a relief. She appreciated the kind work you have done to provide information and a forum for her fans. Take care and feel free to pass this information along as you see fit. Jonathan Butters
We wish to express our sincerest regret to Jonathan and the rest of his family for this tremendous loss. All of us will cherish her writings and miss her style.

Happy New Year Fellow Fans
Published January 13, 2012 | Happy New Year all the fellow fans of our favorite author Dorothy Gilman. We hope you have had a safe and happy holiday season. I don’t know about you but I have been re-reading all of my favorite Dorothy Gilman books and look forward to conversing with my fellow fans. To answer the number 1 question of will there be any more books? The answer is probably not. Dorothy Gilman is getting older and has not published any new works for over 11 years. We, as avid fans, wish her well and if there is ever going to be anymore books I am sure I will be first in line to buy one. All we can really do is read our favorites, share the books with our friends and relatives, and make up our own stories about our favorite characters. You can join the Forum for Dorothy Gilman Fans: http://theforum.mrspollifax.com/smf/index.php and add your ideas and comments to the discussions there. It is an open place for Dorothy Gilman fans to discuss the books, her characters and what story lines you would have like to read about. Just because there may not be any more books doesn’t mean we cannot create our own and share them with our fellow fans.

Mrs Pollifax Movie Updates
Published November 3, 2011 | If you are a Netflix subscriber then you might want to take a look at the movies they have added recently. The Mrs Pollifax – Spy movie with Rosalind Russell has been added to their viewing list. My kids and I love the service we can watch movies and TV-shows as much as we want as many times as we want for only $8.00 a month. We use that service all the time even with cable at home. I can watch on my laptop wherever there is an internet service connection.
I have, again, emailed CBS sales department and requested that the Unexpected Mrs Pollifax movie with Angela Lansbury be released at least in digital format for buying and/renting on www.amazon.com. It seems a shame not to at least release their “made-for-tv” movies in a digital download setting if not on regular dvd. I propose that every fan of Dorothy Gilman’s who would love to see this movie go to the CBS website and send a letter requesting that they company release the movie on digital format! I told them that we would have at least 6000 people wanting to order the movie, if not more, from all across the globe. So, help get this movie released to the public as soon as possible take a few minutes and use the email form on the www.cbs.com website!!!!!
Dorothy Gilman Books Now on Kindle
Published October 21, 2011 | Good Day Fellow Dorothy Gilman Fans! I was cruising the Amazon site looking for new books to add to my new Kindle Reading Device and came across several of Dorothy Gilman’s books available on the Amazon Kindle Section of the Bookstore! Granted only two of her books have actually been converted to a Kindle Book version however several are being offered as audio book downloads from their server directly into your Kindle Device. How cool is that? Because there is no physical media or packaging involved the prices for these audio books are less expensive than the ones you order on CD or cassette tape (if you can still find them). I was so excited I can’t wait until payday so that I can order my first one. We have added the links to these books on our Dorothy Gilman Bookstore page under the category “Books on Tape/CD/Kindle“.
If you don’t have a Kindle Reading Device yet now is the time to get one! They are offering lower prices on their devices and are even offering a Colored Touch-Screen Version of the device called a Kindle Fire. You can look at one on our bookstore page under the heading “Kindle Devices”. It will not be shipped until the middle of November and as soon as I can afford one I am absolutely going to order one. I have enjoyed my lightweight Kindle very much over the last several months and look forward to using the colored version as well.

Published June 24, 2011 | Hey Everybody,Today is Dorothy Gilman’s Birthday! As fans we would like to wish her a very happy one and wish her many more. She has written over 40 books throughout the years that have entertained and delighted all of her fans. We have been introduced to a host of great characters not the least of which is Mrs Pollifax, Spy and Grandmother. There is not one fan that has not been touched by her stories. Even though she has not published a new story since 2002 we still remember her in our thoughts and re-read her books.
We all hope you have a great and wonderful day.

Mrs Pollifax Discussion Forum
Published June 5, 2011 | We are trying a new thing for our Dorothy Gilman fans and as a celebration for Dorothy Gilman’s birthday this month. We have created a discussion forum area that each of her fans can post comments, start discussions and I think you can upload photos and stuff. We are new to this software and hope you will be patient. If you have any suggestions or have used the Simple Machines Forum and know how to add things or whatever then please join in and give us a hand.

youtube movies and clips
Published May 24, 2011 | Hey, fellow Dorothy Gilman fans! I was cruising the web looking to find new material to post to the blog when I happened to put in the youtube search engine Mrs. Pollifax. To my amazement I found a kind of “making of” about the Rosalind Russell version of the Mrs Pollifax movie. I have watched this movie several times and still think the critics were overly harsh. Take a look at it and see what you think.

Favorite Characters
Published April 16, 2010 | Since I didn’t get any response the posting about what countries you would like to see a Mrs Pollifax book set in I thought I would try this one. We all have envisioned new stories with our favorite characters. We have created scenarios where our heroine is in trouble in some new location facing some new kind of “bad person”. Which of your favorite characters from all of Dorothy Gilman’s books would you like to see in a story together? Granted, some of her stories are set in the past and some has more of a 70′s and 80′s feel to them but if you could have any of her characters together in a book which two or three would you like to read about? We are talking fiction here folks so ANYTHING is possible.
My personal favorites would have to be Sister John, Mrs Pollifax and Madame Karitska involved in a mystery. Of all of Dorothy Gilman’s characters I think these will mess the best together. Sister John would be opened to the paranormal and we know that Mrs Pollifax has experienced it as well. So Madame Karistka having a flash about Sister John being in trouble and Mrs Pollifax being the only one to help her would be intriguing. Or, even Mrs Pollifax in trouble somewhere and Sister John being the only one to help her with the guidance of Madame Karistka. You can even expand the story to include one of the “side-kicks” of each of the story lines. Sister Hyacinthe with Sister John, Gaven O’Connell with Madame Karitska and Bishop being dragged along with Mrs Pollifax. Use your imagination and tell your fellow fans what you think would make a great story!

Dorothy Gilman Appearing Soon
Published March 10, 2010 | Hey Guys the the 2010 Edgar Awards is fast approaching. If you haven’t heard yet, Dorothy Gilman has been chosen as the Grand Master for the 2010 Edgar Awards and will be at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City for the ceremonies between April 27th to April 29th. The tickets are $175 a person and can still be bought online through their website at: the Edgar Awards. Here is the blurp from their website….

Mrs Pollifax in your Country
Published January 5, 2010 | Do you live in one of the countries that Dorothy Gilman writers about? Of course, I live in the U.S. but I have never been to New Jersey. I went through New Jersey once on a train but you can’t see very much. Sadly, I have never been out of the country either. I believe that is one of the things I love about her books is that she helps you see the country, the people and what it might be like to visit that place. A good mystery setting with rich descriptive words about place and time makes a good story for me. Our favorite author has set her stories in Mexico, Italy, Albania, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Thailand, Mainland China and various parts of the Africa Continent.
If you have lived or are living in one of the countries and would like to share with us some of the modern descriptions we would greatly appreciate it. The names of one or two of the countries that she has written about may have changed since the books were published but we would like to hear from you anyway. If you have some pictures we could email them to me with a description and I would be happy to post them. Email to: jolene.macfadden@mrspollifax.com
