Dorothy Gilman Fans

Happy New Year Fellow Fans

Happy New Year all the fellow fans of our favorite author Dorothy Gilman. We hope you have had a safe and happy holiday season. I don’t know about you but I have been re-reading all of my favorite Dorothy Gilman books and look forward to conversing with my fellow fans. To answer the number 1 question of will there be any more books? The answer is probably not. Dorothy Gilman is getting older and has not published any new works for over 11 years. We, as avid fans, wish her well and if there is ever going to be anymore books I am sure I will be first in line to buy one. All we can really do is read our favorites, share the books with our friends and relatives, and make up our own stories about our favorite characters. You can join the Forum for Dorothy Gilman Fans: http://theforum.mrspollifax.com/smf/index.php and add your ideas and comments to the discussions there. It is an open place for Dorothy Gilman fans to discuss the books, her characters and what story lines you would have like to read about. Just because there may not be any more books doesn’t mean we cannot create our own and share them with our fellow fans.

Another creative outlet we are hoping you will try out is participating in the All About Limericks – Contemporary Limericks Contest. Our Sponsor site Jolenes Books and More has created a contest that is open to everyone in the U.S. over 18 who would like to win a cash prize for creating family oriented, rated “G”, limericks about contemporary subjects. Who better than the great Mrs Pollifax fans to create fun limericks. You can read all the contest rules on the website that has been created specifically for this contest at: http://all-about-limericks.jolenesbooksandmore.com. Even if you don’t win all the limericks submitted by her fans will be featured here on her fansite. This is a monthly contest with the first prize being issued the 1st of March. What have you got to lose? Start creating your limericks now!

Happy Birthday Dorothy Gilman

Hey Everybody,Today is Dorothy Gilman’s Birthday! As fans we would like to wish her a very happy one and wish her many more. She has written over 40 books throughout the years that have entertained and delighted all of her fans. We have been introduced to a host of great characters not the least of which is Mrs Pollifax, Spy and Grandmother. There is not one fan that has not been touched by her stories. Even though she has not published a new story since 2002 we still remember her in our thoughts and re-read her books.

We all hope you have a great and wonderful day.

Favorite Characters

Since I didn’t get any response the posting about what countries you would like to see a Mrs Pollifax book set in I thought I would try this one. We all have envisioned new stories with our favorite characters. We have created scenarios where our heroine is in trouble in some new location facing some new kind of “bad person”. Which of your favorite characters from all of Dorothy Gilman’s books would you like to see in a story together? Granted, some of her stories are set in the past and some has more of a 70′s and 80′s feel to them but if you could have any of her characters together in a book which two or three would you like to read about? We are talking fiction here folks so ANYTHING is possible.

My personal favorites would have to be Sister John, Mrs Pollifax and Madame Karitska involved in a mystery. Of all of Dorothy Gilman’s characters I think these will mess the best together. Sister John would be opened to the paranormal and we know that Mrs Pollifax has experienced it as well. So Madame Karistka having a flash about Sister John being in trouble and Mrs Pollifax being the only one to help her would be intriguing. Or, even Mrs Pollifax in trouble somewhere and Sister John being the only one to help her with the guidance of Madame Karistka. You can even expand the story to include one of the “side-kicks” of each of the story lines. Sister Hyacinthe with Sister John, Gaven O’Connell with Madame Karitska and Bishop being dragged along with Mrs Pollifax. Use your imagination and tell your fellow fans what you think would make a great story!

Mrs Pollifax in Australia

I know that we may never get another book in the Mrs Pollifax series but I, as an avid FAN, would like to propose story lines that we can make up ourselves.  I have always wanted to go to Australia and I think a Mrs Pollifax story set in this country would be a GREAT idea.  There are so many possibilities for Mrs P. to get into trouble even if she was not “on-assignment” there.

Now according to the CIA World Fact website, which is the only place to look for information about any of the countries that Mrs Pollifax may go,  Australia is approximately  7.7 million sq km in area, has about 21 million people, races consists of white 92%, Asian 7%, aboriginal and other 1%  and the languages are English 78.5%, Chinese 2.5%, Italian 1.6%, Greek 1.3%, Arabic 1.2%, Vietnamese 1%, other 8.2%, unspecified 5.7%.  Granted the country is smaller than the U.S. but it has vast territories with little or nothing in them that could hold a mystery or two.  Not to mention the close proximity to Japan, New Zealand, and hundreds of thousands of islands off the coast.  If there are any fans out there that live in Australia, have relatives who live there or have visited there it would be greatly appreciated if you could contribute a mystery or spy-type thing that has happened there in the last 40 or 50 years that we could make up our own story about.

It is a challenge to think of story lines and the carry through with them but between all of us I think we can come up with some interesting plots and twists and enjoy them together.  Remember to think like Mrs Pollifax, Carstairs, Bishop, Cyrus and even her children.

News for the Site

Hey Gang. We are getting a pretty good response from those who want to be contributors. I have added a Sign-on Widget to the top Right Hand Corner of the page. We need more contributors to make this fan blog interesting. So please feel free to sign-on as a subscriber and then email me to change your status at: becomeacontributor@mrspollifax.com

All subscribers can make comments on posts and all contributors can make new posts and upload pictures.

Just remember to stay on topic and keep the language rated “G” as this is a family website.

I Finally got a response to the Cherry Lawn website that has yearbook pictures. Yes, Dorothy Gilman taught at the Cherry Lawn School and she is in one of the Yearbooks. However, her name is not attached to the photo and we think it is this one:

We want to thank our reader A.O. who submitted the picture!

Site Downtime this past 2 weeks

Hello Dorothy Gilman Fans! We had to migrate the site to a new webserver the past 10 days. We apologize for the site being unavailable during this time. However, we believe that this new server will serve us and our other subscribers with increased support and more flexibility when adding new features to the blog. The server is secure and should allow us to be more respondent to future requests.

The bad news is that we lost all the subscriber information. I will be sending out a newsletter to all those who have sent in emails, signed the guestbook and who made comments in any of the posts.

Just remember due to the increasing problem with hackers and spammers only those who have subscribed to the blog are allowed to make comments. Subscribing is very easy in that you just click on one of the posts, click make a comment and the system will walk you through the quick registration process. Once you have registered you can email me if you would like to become a contributor or author to the blog and I will reset your settings. (jolene.macfadden@mrspollifax.com)  Any author or contributor will be able to add new posts (subject to my approval), upload pictures and link videos from u-tube and the like that may be relevant to our author, her characters, etc. The last advantage of becoming an subscriber is that I can send out emails with new updates to the site whenever they happen as well as any news about the author, bargains on her books, where the two movies can be seen and whatever else that may be pertinent to her many fans around the world.

You can still sign the guestbook without becoming a subscriber and if you are familiar with “feeds” our subscribe to the blog button is finally working. If you get daily news updates or have subscribed to any other blogs you will find the process easy to do and you will see any new posts every time you sign-in to your Yahoo desktop, AOL desktop, Google Desktop and whatever other place you have setup for that purpose.

Again, we apologize for the downtime and our inability to bring over our subscribers and hope you will rejoin us once again. Thanks for your patience and we look forward to your comments, Guestbook messages and emails.

Sincerely,
Jolene MacFadden
webmistress
