Announcing Unexpected Mrs Pollifax

Announcing Unexpected Mrs Pollifax

Like most people my first introduction to the writing of Mrs. Gilman was “The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax”. I didn’t start reading her until the late 1970’s but I was hooked after reading just the one book. This book inspired me to keep looking for new installments and to look for the ones that I hadn’t read yet. Eventually, I had to create a website for her because no one else had bothered to do it for her. Below is a write-up for you to enjoy.

Summer Resident Writer of Hiw…

LANESBORO – A local summer resident, the daughter of a former Pittsfield clergyman, is author of a detective novel that is attracting widespread attention.

The author is Dorothy Gilman, whose “The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax (Doubleday) is her first attempt at writing a full-length novel for adults. This book, the story of a strictly nonglamorous middle-aged woman turned secret agent has been:

—Selected by Frederick Brisson Associates of New York for consideration as starring vehicle for Mr. Brinson’s wife, Rosalind Russell, well-known for her role in “Auntie Mame.”

—Picked as a selection by the Crime Club.

—Turned into the springboard for a sequel which will be released in England.

—Made the subject of a favorable notice over the weekend by the New York Times, which said Mrs. Pollifax is “the first spy in fiction whose adventures should have been illustrated by the late Helen Hokinson.” Miss Hokinson was famous for her cartoons of dowager-type club women.

Miss Gilman, who is known here by her married name, Mrs. Dorothy Gilman Butters, has been a summer resident of Profile Street for 40 years. She will appear Wednesday at 3 on the television program “To Tell the Truth” which will be broadcast locally on Channels 10 and 19.
