We can go back and do things like they did in the past if that is what we really want or needed to do but only for certain occasions. Part of our research into the past of our favorite author we can across two articles about her engagement and marriage.

Dorothy Gilman Becomes Bride
Weds Edgar A. Butters Jr. at Cheshire, Mass: Father Officiates

Dr. and Mrs. J. Bruce Gilman of Highland Park, who are at their summer home in Massachusetts, announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Dorothy Edith Gilman to Edgar Adamson Butters, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar A. Butters of Milltown.

The wedding was held on Saturday morning in the First Baptist Church of Cheshire, Mass. Dr. Gilman performed the ceremony, assisted by the Rev. Chandler Holmes. Only the immediate families attended.

Mrs. Butters is a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and an instructor in art at the Graphic Sketch Club of Philadelphia.

Mr. Butters, a graduate of Rutgers, 1938, has just received his honorable discharge from the Army. He was inducted in May, 1941, served overseas for 36 months with the Signal Corps and holds the Bronze Star Medal and five campaign stars.

Mr. and Mrs. Butters will make their home in Philadelphia, where Mr. Butters will do graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania.

Now this was quite a long time between announcements and the actual event. But I guess World War II probably had something to do with it too.
