Bide A Wee Motel

Bide A Wee Motel

Got the below email last month and thought it would be a great discussion for the group. Read it and see what you think.

I have been rereading some Dorothy Gilman books and have noticed an interesting detail.

In at least three books, Gilman has characters staying at small hotels named Bide-a-Wee.
Thale’s Folly, The Tightrope Walker, and Mrs. Pollifax Pursued are the books that definitely use that name and there may be others.

Similarly, she uses a place name in unrelated books. The (fictional) city of Trafton New Jersey is the setting of the Madame Karitska books. It is also the hometown of the main character in The Tightrope Walker.

Yet another oddity…in The Tightrope Walker, she uses quotations numerous times from her own book, The Maze In The Heart of the Castle. But in the book, she attributes authorship to a character in that book. And by the way, this character wrote a sequel to Maze and it was set to be published posthumously. It kind of makes me wonder if Dorothy Gilman actually wrote a sequel that was never published.

These are not criticisms, merely observations of ways that her books were loosely inter-related.
