After receiving an email from a “Fellow Fan” of Ms. Gilman’s about her prominence in the upcoming Malice Domestic book festival next month I contacted the coordinator for more informaton and confirmation about what is happening. Most of us writers and readers even like to attend these kinds of events to meet authors, attend workshops and to talk about books and story telling. This particular event also has an awards ceremony attached to it every year. Check out there website for more information: https://www.malicedomestic.net/about-us-1

I finally did get a schedule of events from the coordinator. It seems that the “Remembrance for Dorothy Gilman” is not part of the main events but is a precursor event on Thursday for local participants. It’s a shame really because she really deserves a more prominent place in the scheme of things. I mean all of her books contained a little bit of a mystery, no explicit sex or gore but perhaps some violence as Mrs. Pollifax karate chops a bad guy or two. I guess we will give them a break as all but a few of the stories published by our favorite author were published after they formed their little club.
Established in 1989, Malice Domestic is an annual fan convention that takes place each year in Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. Malice celebrates the Traditional Mystery, books best typified by the works of Agatha Christie. The genre is loosely defined as mysteries which contain no explicit sex, or excessive gore or violence.
But if you have $315 to spare and are going to be in the Bethseda, Maryland area between April 24th and 27th, 2025 why not partake of the festivities, meet some established and new authors of the genre and have some fun with like-minded readers.

Things to keep in mind when reading historical fiction – or in this case fiction that was published before your were probably born. For instance, Uncertain Voyage was first published in 1967. This was written and published after the author went through her own divorce and the soul searching that happens when you have big life changes. She was born in the 1920s and brought up to believe that marriage is forever. But then the 60s happened and everything changed. It is a perfect time-period piece to get a glimpse into what life was like during these turbulent times. And it really is a message of hope for all women trying to figure out what they want out of life and how they want to live. It is also a cautionary tale for women of today. DO YOU WANT TO GO BACK to the times when women could not have their own bank accounts, credit cards and buy property without their husband’s or fathers permission?
