Have you seen the book Papa Dolphin’s Table? It was written and published by Dorothy Gilman Butters in 1955. Ms. Gilman wrote and published quite a few stories for teenagers but this one is aimed more towards the 8 to 12 year old set. There are some great illustrations within the book by Kurt Werth. Our favorite writer was also a trained artist. It would be great if we could photograph some of her work!
Here are just a few of the lovely illustrations inside the book.
The review that I posted on Goodreads this morning:
Papa Dolphin’s Table by Dorothy Gilman Butters
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Papa Dolphin’s Table is a very cute chapter book for children but is still an enjoyable read for us oldsters as well. Beginning with a regular family forced to live in a one room apartment due to shortages of homes in the city. The main characters is Papa Dolphin, Mama Dolphin and there three children who are just living their lives as best they can. Papa Dolphin purchases a long, old dining room table that he admires and nobody seems to want that he believes will bring him luck in finding a suitable home for his family and it.
Sadly, they are kicked out of their home and end up living under the table. Fun and silliness ensues but needless to say in the end all’s well that ends well. As is the case with most of Dorothy Gilman’s stories. The book has been out-of-print for some time but if you can find a copy get one for yourself and your children or grandchildren. It has lovely illustrations by Kurt Werth. The book was originally published in 1955. Maybe it will be re-released someday.
I am currently re-reading all of the published works of one of my favorite authors, Dorothy Gilman Butters, who has published 37 different books and several stories that were published in magazines beginning in 1949 until her last one was published in 2002. Sadly, Ms. Gilman passed away in 2012. She will be missed.
