“A Garden Grows in Lower East Pubnico” – Condensed from “A New Kind of Country” by Dorothy Gilman
Reader’s Digest September 1979. page 72 to 76.
“My ten acres produce such a wealth of good things – and such joy – that I sometimes stand in wonder and ask, ‘What if I had never come here?’ “
The authors sons sent me a box of books from their mother’s attic, I’m not sure where now, but it was filled with books, one is autographed, and one magazine. Since, I love Readers Digest I just left it in the box without exploring anything else. Now that we are in the process of republishing her old backlist of books and gathering magazine stories I finally took a look at the Readers Digest. That is when I noticed the hand-written note sayping page 72. Silly me finally took a look down the listing and sure enough there was another condensation from her book “A New Kind of Country!”
Before publishing this version in the upcoming anthology I will have to read both of them again to see if there is a difference between the Ladies Home Journal version and this one with different titles.
