More Magazine Stories Might Be Available

Summer Resident at Lake Authors Magazine Article

LANESBORO – Mrs. Dorothy Gilman Butters, a summer resident of Superior Street for the past 39 years has been notified that another of her short stories has been accepted by a leading magazine.

The story, called “The Eye of Light,” which will be published in a few months by Good Housekeeping, is based on a similar experience the author had while stranded alone for several days at her folk’s cottage when she was 18. ***(story renamed to “Escape” in the June 1964 Good Housekeeping Magazine)***

Ten years ago, Mrs. Butters sold her first short story to the same magazine. Since that time she has had stories accepted by Ladies Home Journal, Calling All Girls, Redbook, the Toronto Star and Jack and Jill.

This time it’s a repeat performance Dorothy Gilman Butters, daughter of the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. J. Bruce Gilman of Highland Park, has graduated from juvenile to adult fiction.

Her first short story for grown-ups is “The Same Language”, appearing in the November issue of Good Housekeeping. She has already published several books for teenagers.]

Actually, Mrs. Butters is better known for the books she has written for teen-agers. Here latests, “Bells of Freedom,” will be published in September by the Macrae-Smith Co. It was written for boys 10 to 14 and concerns an indentured servant to a Boston counterfeiter who witnesses the Battle of Concord.

Four of her 11 books have been chosen by the Junior Literary Guild: they are “Girl in Buckskin”, “Witch’s Silver”, “Heartbreak Street”, and “Ten Leagues to Boston Town”. The setting for “Girl in Buckskin” is at Pontoosuc Lake here in 1703.

“Heartbreak Street” received the most fan mail and has been very popular in Japan and Germany. Another book, “Masquerade,” has been reprinted by the Berkly Highland Books in a paperback under the name “Heart’s Design.” The book concerns four girls who attend art school, one of whom is a Negro.

All of Mrs. Butter’s research has been done in the historical and reference rooms of the Berkshire Anthenacum.

A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Mrs. Butters won the William Emlen Cresson Traveling Scholarship for travel in Europe in 1945. While at college, she tried her hand at writing and illustrating children’s books. This proved to be unsuccessful but led indirectly to her writing for teen-agers.

The author is married to Edgar Butters, who is a seventh-grade social studies teacher in the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township in New Jersey where they make their home. They have two sons, Christoper, 13, and Jonathan, 8.
