They are working on it. We have been getting some responses to the POLL and that is greatly appreciated. If you haven’t had a chance to put in your two cents please do – CLICK HERE – The results will be shared with her agent and hopefully we can get this project up and running. It would be so great to have ALL of her published works available in eBook format so that we can read her whenever we wish on our phones, laptops and iPads. It also makes the stories easier to translate into whichever language you wish. Probably not the most effective solution for translating but still it is a start.

Dorothy Gilman – Creative Writing Book. Some of you may not know this by this fan-site was the very first website I created. In the late 80s or early 90s I noticed that she did not have an internet presence of any kind so I made a fan site for her and have maintained it ever since. One of her sons showed it to her and she graciously sent me an autographed copy of the last book she was able to publish, “Kaleidoscope”, I still have it and re-read the “Clairvoyant Princess” and it’s sequel every couple of years. Yep, it’s about that time again So I think I will read them again during the holidays.
Anyway, I keep on looking for newspaper articles, old pictures and other books that may have her or her stories inside.I purchase them to share with you in the blog posts. I found a book – “On Creative Writing” by Paul Engle published in 1963 that said she was featured in a chapter. It is not what I would have hoped for. It seems Mr. Engle was a professor of Creative Writing at the University of Iowa and compiled a book for his students of various writers. I haven’t taken the time to read the book but the chapter of Dorothy Gilman Butters was just a reprint of her short story, “Sorry Rides a Fast Horse” directly from the Ladies Home Journal. I have added that story in PDF format and you can read it too – CLICK HERE
Final Note for this Month
The above book cover was also found in my search for new materials. It seems that someone has reprinted “The Enchanted Caravan” in paperback and hardback format to sell and has listed it as “In the Public Domain”. That may be false. I have contacted Ms. Gilman’s sons and they have forward it on to her agent but I believe that the copyright is still valid and the book will have to be taken down. I mean if you are going to pirate a book you should at least spend a little time and money on a decent book cover!
I just checked the online records catalog with the copyright office 1978 to present and “Enchanted Caravan” and “Carnival Gypsy” both published in 1949 is not listed. WHAT!!! If I am reading the statute correctly these two books are in a gray area because they were not renewed after 1978 and are both over 70 years old so they may be in the public domain. More later…
If you have anything to share about the author, her written works, pictures or stories about her please use the CONTACT form and let me know. It is always great to hear from her fellow fans. Till next time – be safe out there and read, read, read.
